The U.S. Fulbright Student Program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by providing high-achieving students with the opportunity to study or teach abroad. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program places grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker in the classrooms.

Among the most competitive study abroad awards in the country, the Boren Scholarship is designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills. Boren awards provide undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security and stability of the nation.

The University of Rhode Island's Black Scholar Awards program honored this year's Rhode Island Onyx Senior Honor Society inductees based on their academic excellence, community service, and cultural pride.

Ten University of Rhode Island seniors were honored for their academic excellence and achievements at the 18th annual Black Scholar Awards Ceremony this spring. Donald Cunnigen, professor of sociology and anthropology at URI and a member of the URI Black Faculty Association, established the awards program in 1998 to recognize and honor outstanding African-American seniors.

The URI Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet is an annual event to recognize and celebrate the hard work and devotion of the University's graduating student-athletes.

The goal of URI's orientation program is to welcome new students and their families to the URI community and to start them along a path for a success. The Orientation Team represents URI's diverse and enthusiastic community of learners.

The first student-created and led regional conference took place at the University of Rhode Island in the spring. Called "Diversifying Individuals Via Education" (D.I.V.E. RI), this event focused on enhancing student leadership and social change on college campuses.

Last month, a team of URI public relations students fought global childhood malnutrition, by spreading the word and raising money for Edesia with the #MakeYourGreenCount Plumpy'Nut Challenge. This was a social media campaign encouraging people to "get their green on" and donate by St. Patrick's Day. The students raised more than $4,800 to help children worldwide.

The URI Harrington School of Communication and Media recently recognized outstanding students at its third annual Public Relations Excellence Awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 1. The awards are given presented to students who "capture the essence of achievement.''

Marketing students from the University of Rhode Island's College of Business Administration had amazing experiences last month during the American Marketing Association's 37th Annual International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans.

URI's experiential learning coordinators partner with faculty to design internships with structured learning outcomes that will provide students with a competitive advantage when they graduate.

URI 101 Mentors play an influential role helping first-year students in their transition to college. Mentors create effective and comfortable partnerships with instructors and become resourceful team leaders for all students.

The University of Rhode Island is pleased to announce that more than 4,000 undergraduates have qualified for the Spring 2014 Dean's List. The students represent all of Rhode Island's cities and towns, all six New England states, New York and New Jersey, many other states and more than a dozen countries. Five URI engineering students recently won first place in a national FAA competition with their design of airport collision avoidance system. The team will travel to Washington, D.C., to present their invention to FAA officials.

Many URI undergraduates who excel in their studies in the STEM fields were named as URI's 2014 Science and Engineering Fellows. Through this competitive 14-week fellowship, which began in May, students have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems in a range of disciplines.

The URI Foundation, the URI Research Foundation and the URI Division of Research and Economic Development held the joint award celebration on May 14.
