Four University of Rhode Island students have been awarded $20,000 Boren Scholarships to study foreign languages abroad - one each in China, Jordan, Morocco and Mozambique.

The U.S. Fulbright Student Program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by providing high-achieving students with the opportunity to study or teach abroad. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program places grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker in the classrooms.

Among the most competitive study abroad awards in the country, the Boren Scholarship is designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills. Boren awards provide undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security and stability of the nation.

During the Fall 2014 semester, members of URI's Chi Epsilon Honor Society received scholarships and awards in recognition of their achievements in URI's College of Engineering.

The Rhode Island Foundation recently named 15 University of Rhode Island students Demers fellows. The Beatrice S. Demers Fund provides fellowships to Rhode Island residents and any Rhode Island college or university students who pursue foreign language study. Fellowships cover the cost of tuition, fees, travel, housing and living expenses.

Eight University of Rhode Island undergraduates are among this year's winners of five coveted international scholarships including the Truman Scholarship, the Boren Scholarship, three Fulbright Scholarships, a Whitaker Scholarship, and three NOAA/Hollings Scholarships.
