The University of Rhode Island's Harrington School of Communication and Media honored 11 students at its sixth annual Public Relations Excellence Award Ceremony on March 29.

Each year, the University of Rhode Island honors graduating seniors for their superior academic achievement with a University Academic Excellence Award. Their selection is based on grade point average, as well as other criteria determined by their individual academic departments. For example, criteria might include an honors project, a research presentation, or a student's professional promise. Each recipient receives a certificate of student excellence and a University of Rhode Island medallion.

Donald Cunnigen, professor of sociology and anthropology at URI and a member of the URI Black Faculty Association, established the awards program in 1998 to recognize and honor outstanding African-American seniors.

For the second year in a row, a team from the University of Rhode Island's College of Business Administration won the student case competition, while a second URI team took third place, at the 30th Annual Minority Business Conference sponsored by the Boston Metropolitan Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants. Many URI undergraduates who excel in their studies in the STEM fields were named as URI's 2014 Science and Engineering Fellows. Through this competitive 14-week fellowship, which began in May, students have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems in a range of disciplines.

The Energy Fellows Program provides University of Rhode Island undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain invaluable experience addressing real-world energy issues working in interdisciplinary teams with staff, faculty or outside organizations on one or more projects.

A group of University of Rhode Island business students were named the first-place winners of the student case competition at the 29th Annual Minority Business Conference sponsored by the Boston Metropolitan Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants. Although URI business students have attended the annual conference in the past, this is the first time they have participated in the student case competition.

University of Rhode Island Italian language students recently won an award in an international competition in which participants adapted stories from Giovanni Boccaccio's masterpiece into diverse media, from embroidered pieces to theatrical presentations to a Twitter feed in a rhyming verse form called terza rim a.
