Alyssa Mason of Pawtucket, RI awarded prestigious international scholarship

2013 Jun 17

For more than a decade, University of Rhode Island students have won some of the most prestigious scholarships available to undergraduates studying in the United States, and 2013 is no different.

Eight URI undergraduate students and recent graduates are among this year's winners of five coveted international scholarships including the Truman Scholarship, the Boren Scholarship, three Fulbright Scholarships, a Whitaker Scholarship, and three NOAA/Hollings Scholarships.

Alyssa Mason of Pawtucket,RI, received the Fulbright Scholarship. She majors in education.

Mason won a prestigious Fulbright award to study at the Nottingham Trent University Summer Institute. Mason is URI’s first participant in the Fulbright UK Summer Institute, which offers academic and cultural summer programs to students with at least two years remaining of undergraduate study. That honor should come as no surprise. Mason’s life is full of “firsts.’’ She is the first in her family to attend a four-year college, and she’ll be the first to study overseas. If all goes as planned with her studies, she’ll be the first in her family to work as a teacher. In the spring of 2014 Mason hopes to return to England, this time at the University of East Anglia in Norwich through a program offered by URI. Mason is taking a fifth academic year at URI and plans to graduate in 2015, with a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education. Her minor is writing and rhetoric.
